Why not include the members avatars in the posts and by the side of their names, some of the pictures might be fun! Iv'e only been able to see them if I go into a members profile but it may just be me being a bit of a dodo.

maybe a little re-look around the place might reveal some things, don't be affrid to have a 'wander round' or go back over posts. (i do all the time mostly because of my poor spelling)
but you are right you cannot see your own avatar, or others when posting, but one the post is submitted to the right you should see this information. also if you scroll down on your post, you can see what you are replying to.
if you still are having problems seeing this information, i'll have a look into it personally.
