First the battery MUST be disconnected
Remove the front half of the airbox and filter.
The emission control hoses can be separated just behind the alternator.
It might be wise to mark them up for refitting if you think you may not
remember which goes where.
The four inlet trumpets are next to remove.
Each is held in place by 2 10mm nuts.
The upper nuts on the two on trumpets are the hardest to access.
(do not drop these as each trumpet should have both nuts fitted when replaced).
There is a spring connected to the rear of the airbox to the throttle levels. This should be unhooked at the carb end.
The jubilee clip holding the breather line to the crack case should then be loosened and then the airbox lifted clear.
Remove the red live HT cables and alternator cable from the starter along with the spade connector to the solenoid.
The cable to the oil pressure sender unit is also on this bundle and should be disconnected.
Two bolts hold the starter in place. A 17mm ring spanner will be needed to access the nut on the gearbox side of the bell housing while a 17mm socket and ratchet on the engine side will remove the main bolts and allow the starter to be lifted clear.
Fit the replacement or repaired starter and reassemble in reverse order.
Other jobs to consider while greater access is available to off side engine compartment.
Check integrity of earthing straps
Change oil, the filter has never been so easy to get at.
Change or re-oil air filter as the airbox is open.
